Fraud Alert! “Can You Hear Me Scam”

Just when you thought fraudulent phone calls couldn’t get any worse, the FCC issued a press release on March 27, 2017 alerting consumers about the “Can you hear me” scam effecting thousands of folks across the U.S.  And it goes something like this…

You’re at home and your phone rings. You answer, “Hello”?getting scammed over phone

The person on the other end says, “Can you hear me”

Your answer? A simple, “Yes”.

And that’s it. You’ve just been scammed!

How it Works

Nowadays and with nearly everyone owning a cell phone, it’s almost second nature to ask someone if they can hear you when you call. So when someone calls you and asks this, it’s second nature to answer “Yes” (or “No”). This is where it gets tricky. The scammer then records the “Yes” response and this voice signature can be used to make unauthorized charges to your utility account or a credit card. Most of the time, the callers are under the guise of a company you’re familiar with, such as a mortgage lender or a bank. This month, TRU Computers is offering tips on how to avoid getting scammed.

Tips to Avoid Scammers

Utilize Caller ID & Voicemail. With the Caller ID feature you are able to screen who is calling you. If you don’t recognize a caller’s number, let it go to your voicemail.

Hang up the phone. If you don’t recognize the incoming number, but you answer anyway, hang up immediately if they ask, “Can you hear me”?

Block their number. Though this doesn’t stop them from calling you, it does stop alerting you about an incoming call. The number will simply show up in your missed call list.

The BBB and FCC. If you feel you may have been a victim of a scam, you should report the incident to the FCC via and the Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker at

Robocall Blocking Service. Some scammers are using a voice recording to take the first step in scamming you. If you ever receive a call that is immediately a voice recording asking you to hit a button (ie. the # key) to continue, hang up right away. Consider asking your phone service provider if they provide a Robocall Blocking Service to stop robocalls from reaching you.

And while it’s hard to avoid answering your phone, try to pay closer attention to the calls that are coming in, be a cautious consumer and always check TRU Computer’s news section for industry information and fraud alerts.

What Our Customers Want You to Know

TRU COMPUTERS in Bethel Park has become a comfort zone like no other. I am a nurse with two teenagers and I would say I have less than a lay person’s knowledge of laptop computers and programs. The last few years with laptops have been nothing short of a nightmare. The GEEKSQUAD at Best Buy seemed to be the only game in town at one point and they knew it: thus the endorsed highway robbery that occurred a few years ago when I went in with a disabled laptop. When it was over I ended up paying over the value of the miserable computer. Then I had a computer emergency one night and through McAfee got booted over to another India based “support” company that basically used terror tactics to talk me into another $379.00 worth of nothing. Literal hours on the phone with them resulted in three laptops worse off than when I started.

When I saw the new computer company sign (TRU Computers) go up I was skeptical. However in short order I was impressed. This company is owned by a highly professional, engaging young man who is truly committed to customer service. He immediately put me at ease, fixed my three laptops in a timely manner and did so at a very affordable rate. He did offer a “maintenance” plan at a reasonable price which gave me the additional reassurance that my expensive laptops would never be at the mercy of the GEEKSQUAD again. I have been there a number of times now for maintenance as well as quick issues that were easily managed by the owner and staff there. It is without any hesitation that I would strongly endorse this young man and his exciting new company.
